How to check a Utah remodeling contractor license
Utah licenses contractors through DOPL. Here is which class fits a bathroom remodel, and where the number should show up.
Which license fits a bathroom remodel?
Utah's contractor classifications, in Utah Administrative Code R156-55a-301, put non-structural residential remodeling and repair under R101. Work that changes a structural element, such as removing a wall or adding a beam, needs an R100 residential and small commercial or B100 general building contractor license. Plumbing and electrical work are separate licensed trades.
How to look up a contractor
DOPL's Construction Business Registry lists licensed construction businesses, but only those who chose to be listed, so a missing name is not proof of no license. Ask the contractor for their license number and check it with DOPL before you sign.
Where the number has to appear
Utah Code 58-55-107 requires a contractor's license number on permit applications, contracts and bids. Utah Code 58-55-501 makes it unlawful to represent yourself as a contractor without a license. This site is a referral service and holds no contractor license, which is why it never offers to do the work itself.

License questions
Is a contractor missing from the DOPL registry unlicensed?
Not necessarily. The Construction Business Registry lists only licensees who opted in. Ask for the license number and verify it with DOPL.
Does a tile-only job need an R101 contractor?
This site does not give legal advice on license scope. Ask DOPL or the contractor which classification covers your exact job.
